The Icky Truths of Margarine

Ya know, I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this, but I really, really dislike margarine.  Really.  Butter is the only way to go for me.  Some people say butter makes everything taste better, and I’m inclined to agree with them.  Except for sweets.  Butter on ice cream?  No thanks.  Still, butter would be like a bazillion times better than margarine.

I would use the term “hate” in relation to margarine to show my utter dislike for it, but people say “that’s a strong word.”  Actually, that’s not why I don’t use it, because it doesn’t matter what people say.  I don’t use it because I actually don’t hate it.  If that’s all there is to use, I’ll use a tad bit of margarine…or I’ll just go without.  That will be after making sure there isn’t any butter within a twenty mile radius.  Which is pretty rare. 😉  Still, margarine is absolutely disgusting.  I’m not talking about taste here, people.  Sure, the taste isn’t all that great, and butter beats it by a long shot, but I’m talking about what margarine is made of.  Um, disgusting.

Wanna know why I feel so strongly about margarine?  I found this article a few years ago, and recently dug it back up.  Not only is it informational, but humorous.  Enjoy it, really.  Also enjoying throwing out your margarine after you finish reading this post.  Feel that sense of triumph!

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal – so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

Ha!  Imagine that – it killed the turkeys, so they sold it to man.  How genius.

DO YOU KNOW… The difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end…gets very interesting!

–Both have the same amount of calories.

–Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women.  Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

–Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

–Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!

–Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

–Butter has been around for centuries, where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..

–Very high in Trans fatty acids.

–Triple risk of coronary heart disease.

— Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and Lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

–Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.

–Lowers quality of breast milk.

–Decreases immune response.

–Decreases insulin response.

And here’s the most disturbing fact…. HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

–Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of

–No flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

–It does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it even those teeny
weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

See what I mean?  Disgusting.  So, this was my health-sense for the day!  Now, I’m not a huge health nut, but I do think that we should take the best care of our bodies as possible, and eat good foods.  After all, Paul did say, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”  (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

Speaking of eating good foods, I’ve heard SO many people talk about feeling amazing when they go gluten-free, so I decided for my New Years’ Resolution to go gluten-free.  It lasted about 1 1/2 days.  I made that resolution, and then forgot that pasta has gluten in it.  And the bread for a sub sandwich.  And pizza dough.  I still really want to try a gluten-free diet, but I guess I’m not disciplined enough yet.
