About “A Cinder’s Tale” by Stephanie Ricker It’s a dangerous life, yet Elsa wouldn’t trade this opportunity to work at Tremaine Station, mining cendrillon from the seething surface of planet Aschen. Nevertheless, when a famous deep space explorer and his handsome son dock their starcraft at the space station, Elsa finds herself dreaming of far galaxies beyond Aschen’s blistering heat. There is no time for dreaming, however, when danger threatens the space station, and Elsa and her fellow miners are tested to the limits of their courage. Onto the interview!

ME: You have stated that you enjoy archery. Which bow style do you prefer: recurve or compound?

STEPHANIE: Hi, Tialla!  Excellent question!  I could chat about archery for hours.  I’m a recurve girl all the way, although I do enjoy a good longbow as well.  I prefer traditional archery in general; a compound bow feels a little bit like cheating to me, with its pulleys and sights and releases. I enjoy knowing that I’m participating in a sport that is thousands of years old.  I love history, and when I shoot, I feel like I’m connected to the past in a tangible way.  Someone a thousand years ago felt the same sting of the string against her fingers, had to make the same adjustments for wind and distance, and heard the same satisfying thunk as the arrow hit its mark.  Granted, my counterpart in the past was probably shooting at something alive and not at a target from the sporting goods store, but I’m content with an incomplete analogy. : )
